Sullivan Brown

Hey Sullivan, I uploaded a Pettibone baseball drawing-- a really big drawing!

SULLIVAN'S PROPOSAL

For my final project I would like to do a study of the human figure, by drawing a stylized picture of 9 baseball figures. The medium would be pencil ink and colored pencil. Each character would be of very different appearance with their uniforms unifying them in the composition. Each figure would be based on a different shape as a design element. Please contact me if you have any questions.

  1. Margaret's response:

Give me a couple sketches on Tuesday to let me know better what you have in mind.
Furthermore, you need to send me a longer proposal that specifies the 3-4 artists who inspire the project, and also the size of the drawings you intend to make.
Also, I am curious, do you intend to glorify the baseball players, caricature them, make them look like Francis Bacon paintings, or ...?
So yes, you can do a project in this direction, but I need more details.

An interesting artist to look at might be Raymond Pettibon. He is an extremly prolific (and odd) artist, who did album covers for bands like Black Flag. He is also obsessed with baseball and brings a complex understanding to representation and sport.

I would also love to hear more about why baseball players? what does uniformity through the uniform mean? what does making them different shapes mean? what scale will this be? why nine? Is this the best way to get a concept across, or is it merely a formal exploration of design elements?

Is there something of relevance in the act of excercise and exertion that is inherent to sports and drawing-- is there a connection you can make between the process of making these works and what they signify? i think that there is potential within the notion of "excercise" - we practice skills to hone ability, the repetition of the content might be meaningful in relationship to this idea.

  3. Sullivan, what are you going to be doing? Will it be baseball players or animal anatomy? If animal anatomy, what is the idea behind the work? Remember that the final assignment needs to have a concept behind it, beyond just drawing facility. Let me know, Margaret

  4. For my final project, I will be drawing 9 different animals in baseball uniforms. The piece will be 18in by 24in and will be done with graphite pencil, ink and colored pencil. I will use the line quality of Egon Schiele, The vibrant colors and exaggerated features of Lisa Yuskavage, and the obscure subject of Amy Cutler.
I want to this piece as a study of Animal anatomy and to express my love for baseball. Each animal will portray a different position player on the baseball team, and a roster will be written on the back of the piece to display each animals’ position and their place in the batting line up. I will draw all the animals from photographs, but will use Ysukavage and Schiele’s to exaggerate their features. The piece will show how different positions on the baseball field exhibit different animal characteristics, their features will be exaggerated to further exemplify these characteristics.
